Ten principles of good design, by Dieter Rams

No matter how long you've been in the design profession, there are always a few things that can keep you grounded and keep you focused on what's important rather than what the latest fad or trend is. Reminders of what good design is.

I'm not sure why, but I never learned about Dieter Rams while at design school. Maybe if I stuck with the industrial design track I would have, but I didn't. The amazing thing about the Internet is that it can surprise you with information you didn't think you need until you find it. That sums up my exposure to Mr. Rams.

You'll find his ten principles of good design listed below. These aren't new, but ideas don't necessarily need to be new to be worthwhile. It's easy to lose track off these. It's easy to let these slip away under the gloss and the glamor of the latest design fad. These are, at heir very core, simple. Remember them, memorize them, tape them to your monitor, add them to your desktop image. They're that good.

Good design:
  • is innovative
  • makes a product useful
  • is aesthetic
  • makes a product understandable
  • is unobtrusive
  • is honest
  • is long-lasting
  • is thorough down to the last detail
  • is environmentally friendly
  • is as little design as possible

Even more goodness is below. I've watched this video over 5 times...this week. If you have any interest in design, I think you'll like this video.
